Ukulele starter kits: what you need beyond the ukulele

The ukulele is the cheapest honest instrument a beginner can buy, which makes the accessory list short — and makes the two items people skip the ones that decide whether it gets played.

By Stephen V. · Writes Reed & Rosin · last verified

The short answer

Beyond the ukulele itself, a beginner needs a clip-on tuner, a padded bag and a method book, in that order. A strap is worth adding for a child or anyone who plays standing. Spare strings matter more than they look like they do, because most budget ukuleles ship with strings that are the weakest part of the instrument.

Some links on this page earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change which instrument we recommend, and it does not change the order. We also earn nothing when the honest answer is “rent it” — and we still say so. Full disclosure.

Scores are our own editorial fit rating from published specifications — the rubric is on our methodology page. They are not test results; we have not played these instruments.

Why the ukulele accessory list is so short

A first violin needs rosin, a shoulder rest, a case and a setup before it makes a decent sound. A first clarinet needs reeds, a swab, cork grease and a mouthpiece it probably did not come with. The ukulele needs almost nothing, and that is a large part of why this site recommends it so often to a nervous first-time buyer.

Which means the accessory conversation is not about length, it is about order. There are four things worth buying and a clear sequence to buy them in, and the mistake people make is buying the decorative ones first.

We have not played these accessories and do not claim to have. Sizes, padding figures, fit and attachment methods below are read from the makers’ published listings on a dated visit — see how we work.

What a ukulele bundle actually includes

Most budget ukuleles are sold two ways: bare, or as a bundle with a bag, a tuner, a strap and some picks. The bundles are usually reasonable value and the contents are usually the cheapest possible version of each item.

Bundle contents against what a beginner needs
ItemUsually in a bundle? Is the bundle version good enough?
Gig bagYesUsually an unpadded nylon sleeve. Fine indoors, not enough for a school bag
Clip-on tunerOftenFrequently the weakest item — a tuner that reads slowly teaches a child that tuning is miserable
StrapSometimesUsually a single cord that goes round the neck and hooks the sound hole. Workable
Spare stringsRarelyAlmost never included, and the fitted strings are usually the weakest part of a budget ukulele
PicksYesMostly unnecessary — the ukulele is a fingers instrument and felt picks are a preference
Method bookNoNever included. An online lesson code is not the same thing

Bundle contents are the common pattern across the listings read for this site's ukulele coverage, read 16 October 2026. Individual bundles vary — read the listing.

The order to buy things in

  1. 1

    A tuner, before anything else

A ukulele goes out of tune faster than any other beginner instrument because nylon strings stretch for weeks after fitting. An untuned ukulele sounds bad no matter who is playing it, and a beginner cannot tell the difference between a bad instrument and an out-of-tune one.

  2. 2

A padded bag, if it leaves the house

If the ukulele lives on a stand in a bedroom, the bundle sleeve is fine. If it goes to school, to a lesson or to a grandparent's house, padding is the difference between a knock and a crack.

  3. 3

A method book, by week two

The gap between 'I can play four chords' and 'I can play a song' is where most beginners quit, and a book is what bridges it. Books also pay this site more than instruments do, which is disclosed on every page.

  4. 4

A strap, if there is a child or a standing player

A seated adult can hold a ukulele against the body with the forearm. A child frequently cannot, and the hand that should be fretting ends up supporting the instrument instead.

  5. 5

Spare strings, before you need them

Budget ukuleles often ship with strings that are the cheapest component. A set of decent nylgut strings costs about ten dollars and changes the instrument more than any other ten dollars you can spend on it.

The upgrade that is not an accessory

If you only do one thing from this page to a budget ukulele, change the strings. The body and the fretwork on a cheap ukulele are usually acceptable; the fitted strings frequently are not, and they are the part touching your fingers and making the sound. Our page on ukulele strings covers which set and why nylgut is the usual answer.

Straps, and the strap-button problem

Here is the thing nobody mentions before you buy a strap: most soprano ukuleles have no strap buttons. A guitar strap hooks onto two pins fitted at the factory. A typical first ukulele has one at the bottom if you are lucky, and often none at all.

That gives three options. You can have a shop fit strap buttons, which is a real and permanent modification to a new instrument and costs more than the strap. You can use a single cord strap that loops behind the neck and hooks into the sound hole, which is what most bundles supply. Or you can use a two-point strap with hooks that clip on without drilling, which is the compromise most beginners should start with — it spreads the load across two points without anyone taking a drill to a new instrument.

Both strap types are below. The honest trade is that a sound-hole hook puts load on the instrument’s top rather than on a fitted pin, which is fine for something that weighs as little as a ukulele and would not be acceptable on a guitar.

Bags: size is the whole specification

Ukulele bags are sized by the instrument, and soprano, concert, tenor and baritone are genuinely different lengths. A concert ukulele does not fit a soprano bag, and a soprano in a concert bag slides around inside it, which is worse than a snug unpadded sleeve.

If you are not sure which size you have, our ukulele size guide covers how to tell and which size suits which player. Buy the bag for the instrument you own, not the one you might upgrade to.

Padding is the other number, and it is one of the few places where listings publish something checkable. A figure in millimeters is worth more than the word “padded”, and 10 mm is the sensible budget floor.

What we picked, and why

The criteria: does it solve a problem that actually stops a beginner playing, is the fit specified rather than assumed, and is it proportionate to a ukulele that frequently costs under a hundred dollars. That last one rules a lot of things out — a sixty-dollar case on a fifty-dollar ukulele is not a recommendation, it is a different purchase.

The tuner at the top is the same clip-on this site recommends for guitar, because a chromatic clip-on tuner does not care what instrument it is clamped to and buying one good one beats buying two mediocre ones. Everything else is sized specifically for a ukulele, with the size stated on each.

For the instrument itself, start at the best beginner ukuleles; if you are weighing it against a first guitar, we compare them directly at ukulele against guitar for beginners. The guitar version of this page is at guitar starter kits, and the pick question — which matters far less on a ukulele — is covered at guitar picks for beginners.

The picks, in full

Every card below is written from the published specification and the manufacturer’s own documentation. We have not played these instruments — see how we work for exactly what that means and what we do instead.

Snark SN5X Clip-On Chromatic Tuner

Our top pick · Tuning in a noisy room

Snark SN5X Clip-On Chromatic Tuner

A vibration-sensing clip-on works in a noisy band room where a microphone tuner cannot. The SN5X covers guitar, bass and violin, which means one tuner for a household with two players.

What works

  • Reads vibration through the instrument, so ambient noise does not confuse it
  • Covers guitar, bass and violin in one unit
  • Full-color display a child can read across a room

What to know

  • The clip hinge is the failure point — it is the part that breaks first
  • Battery drains if the tuner is left clipped on and switched on

ChromaCast Soprano Ukulele Gig Bag, 10 mm Padding

Pick 2 · A first soprano ukulele on a tight budget

ChromaCast Soprano Ukulele Gig Bag, 10 mm Padding

The honest budget bag for a soprano, and on a first ukulele that is usually the right call: spend the difference on the instrument. Padding is published at 10 mm, which is enough for a knock and not enough for a crush.

What works

  • Published 10 mm padding, which is a real number rather than 'padded'
  • Sized for soprano, the size most first ukuleles are
  • Cheap enough that it does not change the budget conversation

What to know

  • 10 mm will not save an instrument from a dropped backpack
  • Soprano only — a concert ukulele does not fit

Cheerock Adjustable No-Drill Ukulele Strap with Double J Hooks

Pick 3 · A ukulele with no strap buttons fitted

Cheerock Adjustable No-Drill Ukulele Strap with Double J Hooks

Most first ukuleles have no strap buttons, and the honest answer to that is a strap that does not need them rather than a trip to a repair shop. The J hooks clip to the sound hole and the headstock, so nothing gets drilled into a new instrument.

What works

  • Requires no drilling, which is the whole problem on a first ukulele
  • Listed as fitting soprano, concert and tenor, so it survives a size change
  • Adjustable length, so one strap works for a child and a parent

What to know

  • A sound-hole hook puts the load on the instrument's top rather than on an end pin
  • Clip-on hooks can be knocked loose in a way a bolted strap button cannot

Aquila Super Nylgut AQ-100 Soprano

Pick 4 · Making a cheap ukulele sound like a real one

Aquila Super Nylgut AQ-100 Soprano

The single cheapest upgrade to a budget ukulele. Nylgut is a synthetic developed to imitate gut, and swapping factory strings for a set is usually a bigger improvement than the next instrument up.

What works

  • Transforms the tone of an entry-level ukulele for a small fraction of its price
  • High-G tuning as supplied — the standard, cheerful ukulele sound
  • Holds pitch better than generic nylon after the initial stretch

What to know

  • Needs several days of repeated retuning before it settles
  • Soprano set only — check the size before ordering for a concert or tenor

Gator Cases Foam Padded Concert Ukulele Gig Bag (GBE-UKE-CON)

Pick 5 · A concert ukulele that leaves the house

Gator Cases Foam Padded Concert Ukulele Gig Bag (GBE-UKE-CON)

A ukulele that lives in a bag gets carried to places where people play, and a ukulele that gets carried gets played. Gator's foam padding is the difference between a dust cover and something that survives a school backpack.

What works

  • Foam padding rather than an unlined nylon sleeve
  • Fits concert ukuleles up to 25.25 in, which the listing states rather than implies
  • Gator makes the band-room cases the site already recommends, so the build is a known quantity

What to know

  • Costs a real fraction of a first ukulele
  • Sized for concert — a soprano rattles inside it and a tenor will not close

Pick 6 · A ukulele that already has strap pins

Levy's Leathers 1/2 in Jacquard Weave Ukulele Strap, Leather Ends (MJ19UKE-003)

The strap to buy once the ukulele has strap buttons on it — a proper woven strap with leather ends, from a maker whose guitar straps outlive the guitars. It is the upgrade, not the first purchase.

What works

  • Leather strap-pin ends rather than a knotted cord
  • Jacquard weave, which does not stretch the way a thin nylon strap does
  • Adjusts to 50 in, so an adult can wear it standing

What to know

  • Needs strap pins, which most soprano ukuleles do not come with
  • Half an inch wide — fine for a ukulele's weight, too narrow for anything heavier

Questions people actually ask

What do you need to buy with a ukulele?

A clip-on tuner, a padded bag if it leaves the house, and a method book. A strap matters for a child or anyone playing standing, and a spare set of nylgut strings is the single upgrade that most improves a budget ukulele.

Are ukulele starter bundles worth it?

Usually yes on value and usually no on the individual items. The bag is typically an unpadded sleeve and the included tuner is often slow to read. A bundle is a reasonable way to start, with the expectation that the tuner and bag get replaced first.

Do you need a strap for a ukulele?

An adult playing seated generally does not. A child frequently does, because holding the instrument against the body takes a hand that should be fretting. Most soprano ukuleles have no strap buttons, so a no-drill clip-on strap is the usual beginner answer.

Does a ukulele need a hard case?

Rarely. A ukulele is light and inexpensive enough that a padded gig bag is proportionate for most students. Buy padding measured in millimeters rather than described as 'padded', and buy it in the size of the ukulele you own.

Should you change the strings on a new ukulele?

On a budget instrument, usually yes. Fitted strings on cheap ukuleles are frequently the weakest component, and a set of nylgut strings costs about ten dollars. Expect any new nylon string to stretch and need retuning for a week or two after fitting.
