Who writes this
Reed & Rosin is written by Stephen V.. An enthusiast who is genuinely into this — I read the manuals, compile the published specs, and do the math. No lab coat, and no instruments in a test room, because there isn't one.
That framing is deliberate and it is worth being precise about, because the alternative — claiming expertise we do not have — is the thing this site exists partly to avoid. Stephen V. is not a music teacher, a band director, a luthier or a certified anything. He is a person who finds this category genuinely interesting and who is willing to do the unglamorous work of compiling specifications and checking arithmetic.
What we actually do
We compile published manufacturer specifications. We read the manuals and care instructions. We compute cost-of-ownership and rent-vs-buy break-even arithmetic and publish the working. We cross-check sizing conventions against more than one source and say so when those sources disagree. And we date everything, so you can see how old a claim is.
What we do not do, said plainly
We have not played these instruments
There is no test lab. We do not own the instruments on this site, we have not spent forty hours with any of them, and we do not have a panel of experts. Every site in this category says otherwise about itself, and we would rather be the one that does not.
What that costs us is the “in our testing” sentence everyone else writes. What it buys is that everything we do claim can be checked, which is a better trade than it looks.
We also do not invent reviews, ratings, review counts or awards. There are no testimonials anywhere on this site, because we have no customers and therefore no honest testimonials to publish. A clean page beats a fabricated one.
The scores on our product cards
Every pick carries a fit score out of ten. That score is an editorial judgment derived from published specifications against the rubric on our methodology page — it is not a test result, and it never appears in the structured data search engines read, because presenting an editorial opinion as a review rating would contradict everything above.
How we make money
Affiliate commissions. When you buy through a link on this site we earn a percentage, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which instrument we recommend or the order we rank them in.
There is one conflict worth naming rather than burying: we earn on purchases and nothing at all on rentals, and our rent-vs-buy pages frequently recommend renting. We publish those pages anyway, with the arithmetic shown, because a rent-vs-buy section that only ever said “buy” would be worthless. The full disclosure is here.
Who this site is for
The parent of a new band or orchestra student, and the adult beginner. Both arrive at the same problem from different directions: too much jargon, a real fear of buying junk, and an equal fear of overspending on something that ends up under a bed by March.
Everything here is organized around that: sizing before models, arithmetic before opinions, and the band director’s advice above ours wherever the two might differ.
