Check the tuners before anything else
Almost every “this ukulele is terrible” verdict traces back to one component. Friction pegs are the small round pegs that stick straight out of the back of the headstock, held by nothing but friction against the wood. They slip. A ukulele that will not stay in tune for a single song is unplayable, and a beginner has no way to know that the instrument rather than their ear is at fault.
Geared tuners have a visible gear mechanism, usually sticking out sideways, and they hold. This is visible in every product photograph and it is the first thing to check. It matters more than the wood, the finish, the brand and the price.
Then decide the size
Soprano is the classic small ukulele, concert is a couple of inches longer, tenor longer still. The mistake is buying a soprano for an adult because that is what a ukulele looks like — an adult with average hands will crowd the frets and conclude they are clumsy.

Laminate versus solid wood
The same distinction as on guitars, with a twist: it matters less on a ukulele. The body is small, the strings are nylon and low tension, and the difference a solid top makes is genuinely subtle at this size.
Laminate is also more stable, which matters for an instrument likely to be carried around. Our honest read is that on a first ukulele, the money is better spent on the tuners and the strings than on a solid top.

Intonation is the one a beginner cannot fix. If a ukulele plays in tune open and sharp at the twelfth fret, the saddle is in the wrong place and no adjustment at home will correct it.
Carbon fiber is a genuine option
