Instrument cases for school band students
Most student band instruments arrive in a case, so this is not a first purchase. It becomes one the week a latch breaks, a hinge tears or a student has to carry a horn, a music folder and a mute two blocks to school.

The short answer
For a failed school case, replace it with a hard shell sized for the instrument: the Protec MX301 for trumpet and the MX307 for Bb clarinet. A student who walks to school and carries music and a mute is better served by the Protec Explorer C238X gig bag. For flute, check the foot-joint fit before ordering anything.

Why this is a replacement purchase, not a first one
Student band instruments are sold and rented in cases, and for the first year or two that case is usually adequate. Two things change it into a problem. The first is mechanical failure: on rental-grade cases the hinge or the latch is the part that goes, and it tends to go in the second year. A case that does not latch is not a case — it is a bag that occasionally drops a trumpet.
The second is the commute. A student who walks or takes a bus is carrying the instrument, a music folder, and for brass players a practice mute. School cases almost never have pockets for any of that, so the folder gets carried loose and arrives bent, and the mute rides in a backpack. That is a different problem from protection, and it has a different answer.
Hard case or gig bag: the actual trade
| Hard shell case | Soft gig bag | |
|---|---|---|
| Survives being dropped or sat on | Yes, within reason | No |
| Weight to carry | Heavier | Lighter |
| Music and accessory pockets | Interior compartment only | Usually external pockets for music and a mute |
| Stacks in a band room or a bus bay | Yes | Not safely |
| Buy it when | The original case has failed, or the horn is stored at school | The student walks and carries their own music |

The honest summary: a hard case protects the instrument and a gig bag protects the student’s back and their sheet music. If the horn lives in a school locker room or travels in a bus bay with thirty others, buy the hard case. If it travels on a child’s shoulder along with everything else they own, a gig bag is the one they will actually use — and a case a student resents carrying is a case that gets left behind.
Trumpet
Protec Trumpet MAX Rectangular (MX301) is the replacement to buy when a school case has failed. A rigid rectangular shell takes being stacked and stood on end, which is the real life of a band-room instrument, and the interior compartment holds valve oil, a spare mouthpiece and a cloth. It is heavier and bulkier than a bag, and the most expensive case here.
Protec Explorer Series Trumpet Bag (C238X) is the pick for a student who walks to school, because of the pockets: one for sheet music, one for a mute. The mute pocket is worth more than it sounds once a practice mute is in the kit, because a mute rolling loose in a backpack is a mute that gets lost. It is soft-sided, so it will not survive the horn being dropped.
While the case is open, check the oil. A trumpet that has not been oiled is a trumpet with sticking valves, which gets diagnosed as a student problem — our valve oil page covers how often, and the cleaning guide covers the rest.
Clarinet
Protec Bb Clarinet MAX (MX307) is the standard replacement when a student clarinet’s original case hinge or latch gives out. It is shaped specifically for a Bb clarinet rather than sold as a universal fit, which matters: the joints need to be supported where the case expects them to be, and a clarinet rattling in a loose case is a clarinet with keys being bent.
Check what you have before ordering. This case is for Bb clarinet only — it will not take an A clarinet or a bass clarinet. Almost every school student plays Bb, but it is worth thirty seconds of confirmation. Our beginner clarinet page and care kit page cover what else should be inside it.
Flute, and the fit spec that catches people out
Flutes come with two different foot joints, B foot and C foot, and a B foot flute is longer. A case cut for a C foot flute will not close on a B foot instrument. That is the single most common ordering mistake for flute cases, and it is why the Gator Cases Largo Series (GBB-FLUTE) is a sensible default: its listing states it fits both B foot and C foot flutes, which removes the question.
Largo is Gator’s entry series, so the shell is lighter than its hard-shell Andante line, and the exterior will scuff. For a student carrying it with a backpack that is usually the right trade. If you are not sure which foot joint your flute has, the quickest check is to compare it with a classmate’s — or ask the band director, who will know in a glance.
Put a name on it
Band rooms are full of identical black cases. A luggage tag with a name and a phone number on the handle recovers more instruments than any other precaution, and school programs ask for it for a reason. If the instrument is rented or school-owned, check the inventory number is recorded somewhere other than the case you are about to throw away.
Strings and other instruments
This page is about band instruments. Violin and viola cases are a separate problem, because a bowed instrument case has to protect a bow as well and the suspension inside the case matters — those are on our violin cases page. If you are at the start of all this and still working out what the band program needs, start at our school band instruments page.

What works
- Shaped specifically for Bb clarinet, so the joints are supported where they should be
- Hard shell with a shoulder strap

Pick 4 · A student flute, either foot joint

A lightweight case sold for B-foot and C-foot student flutes, which is the specification to check before ordering any flute case — a B-foot flute is longer and will not close in a C-foot case.
What works
- Listing states it fits both B-foot and C-foot flutes, which removes the usual ordering mistake
- Light enough for a student carrying it with a backpack
- Cheapest case in this group

Questions people actually ask
Should a school band student have a hard case or a gig bag?
A hard case if the instrument is stored at school or travels in a bus bay, because it survives being stacked and knocked over. A gig bag if the student walks and carries their own music and mute, because it is lighter and has the pockets.
Do I need to buy a case for a school band instrument?
Usually not at first - student instruments are sold and rented in cases. It becomes necessary when the latch or hinge fails, which on rental-grade cases tends to happen in the second year.
What flute case fits a B foot flute?
One that states B foot compatibility. A B foot flute is longer than a C foot flute and will not close in a C foot case. The Gator Largo GBB-FLUTE listing states it fits both, which removes the guesswork.
Will a clarinet case fit any clarinet?
No. Cases are cut for a specific instrument - the Protec MX307 is for Bb clarinet and will not take an A or a bass clarinet. A clarinet loose in an oversized case is a clarinet with keys being bent.
