Use a light, fast oil such as Al Cass on tight new valves, and a slightly heavier oil such as Blue Juice on older valves that have worn loose. Oil every two to three playing sessions, applying it down the valve casing rather than onto the piston.

Why it matters more than it sounds
Trumpet valves are pistons machined to a very close fit inside their casings — close enough that they seal air without a gasket. That fit only works with a film of oil between the two surfaces. Without it, metal drags on metal: the valves slow, then stick, then wear.
For a beginner, sticky valves are worse than the mechanical problem suggests. Notes come out late or not at all, and the student assumes they played wrong. It is the cheapest possible source of discouragement and the cheapest to fix.

Using a heavy oil on very tight new valves makes them feel sluggish. Using a light oil on worn valves means it drains away quickly and the valves get noisy. Matching the oil to the instrument's age is most of the decision.
How to apply it properly

Unscrew the top valve cap and lift the piston partway out
Only partway — an inch or two is enough. There is no need to remove the piston completely, and doing so risks dropping it or reassembling it in the wrong casing.

Apply three or four drops onto the exposed piston
Directly onto the metal of the piston itself, not into the casing from above. Rotate the piston slightly as you go so the oil spreads around its circumference rather than running down one side.

Lower it back and align the guide
Each piston has a guide that seats into a notch. It will only go in one way. Lower it gently and turn slightly until it drops fully and the valve moves freely.

Screw the cap back and work the valve twenty times
This distributes the oil along the full length of the piston. The action should become noticeably lighter within a few presses.

Repeat for each valve individually
One at a time. Valves are numbered and are NOT interchangeable — swapping two makes the instrument unplayable and a beginner will not know why.
Do not oil through the bottom cap or the slide
Both shortcuts appear in online advice and neither works well. Oil poured through the bottom valve cap mostly pools there. Oil poured down a tuning slide travels wherever gravity takes it and coats the tubing rather than the piston.
The piston needs a film on its own surface. Lifting it and oiling it directly is the only method that reliably achieves that, and it takes under a minute.
How often
Every two to three playing sessions is a reasonable default, and the real answer is when the valves start to feel slow. A properly oiled valve drops under its own weight when the trumpet is tilted; one that hesitates needs oil.
More often is harmless. Excess oil simply drains out through the water keys, which is why a trumpet occasionally leaves a small oily mark on a carpet after emptying — put a cloth down rather than reducing the oiling.
Slide grease is a different product
Valve oil is thin and goes on the pistons. Slide grease is thick and goes on the tuning slides, which move rarely and need to stay put once positioned. Using valve oil on slides means they drift; using grease on valves seizes them almost immediately.
The exception is the third valve slide, which a player moves constantly to adjust intonation. That one wants a light grease or a heavier oil so it moves freely rather than staying put.
