The band book comes first
Ask the director for the exact series, edition and instrument part. Method books introduce notes in different orders, and a clarinet student on a different book is out of step with their section within weeks. The Bb clarinet book is a distinct object from the flute or trumpet book.
Essential Elements is the most widely adopted; Standard of Excellence and Tradition of Excellence are also common and equally good. Matching the program is the only thing that matters.
Crossing the break
Every clarinettist hits the same wall in their first year, and it has a name. The clarinet overblows at the twelfth rather than the octave, which means the fingering pattern does not simply repeat as it does on most wind instruments. Moving from the low register to the next one requires a completely different fingering and the addition of the register key.
In practice the sound often disappears for a few lessons. A student who was progressing steadily suddenly cannot produce a note they could play last week, and concludes they have gone backwards.
They have not. This is universal, it resolves with systematic practice, and it is the single most useful thing for a clarinet parent to know in advance.

Why band methods are paced slowly
Thirty beginners across eight instruments have to reach the same page each week, so a band method is paced for the slowest reasonable rate of progress across the whole group. A quick student will find it gentle.
The correct response is not to abandon the band book — that breaks the alignment it exists for — but to add a lesson method alongside it. That is exactly what Rubank is for.
What no book can do
Diagnose a reed problem. A large proportion of first-year clarinet difficulties — squeaking, notes that will not speak, a strangled tone — are caused by a dead reed, the wrong reed strength or a poor mouthpiece rather than by the student.
Before concluding that a passage is too hard, put on a fresh reed. It resolves the problem often enough that it is worth making the first check rather than the last. See the reeds guide.
